“Be gentle,” I seem to be saying to the little purple balloon in my hand. “It’s my first time.” To be honest, I was terrified of the thing. I had never tried to blow a balloon to bursting before and was scared that it would hurt. At the same time, I desperately wanted to see it explode. You can see the mix of excitement, trepidation, and anticipation in my face. I blow the balloon almost to capacity once, before chickening out. After gathering my courage, I blow it up again, breath by breath, watching it expand inch by inch. The balloon grows to an impossible size. It’s shape distorts. It grows nearly transparent. And finally, It bursts with a report like a rifle. I jump in my seat. I didn’t expect it to be so loud! It genuinely scares me nearly to death!
